AS / A2 Health and Social Care [New for 2008]

These courses are aimed at students who have already studied Health and Social Care at GCSE level or those that are determined to go into a caring profession in the future e.g. nursing, social work, medicine, child care, residential care for the elderly or teaching.

Entry requirements to the course are grade C or above in Health and Social Care GCSE or equivalent. Students should also have grade C in English Language.

Courses that could be chosen to accompany this course where there is a degree of overlap are, Sociology, Psychology, Biology and PE. I would advise students to think carefully about their career choice and University / F.E. choices.

GCE Health and Social Care awards are part of a new suite of vocationally focused GCEs and replace VCE Health and Social Care. These new awards incorporate an extremely wide range of AS and A2 Level units. These are flexibly structured to give plenty of choice. At AS GCE Level, the single (three units) award is available. At GCE Level, single (six units) award is available. Grades are awarded from A - E for both awards.

There are three mandatory AS units* and one mandatory A2 unit**, which form part of the award. The other units will be chosen by staff to make up the complete award, [six unit in total].

This new award provide significantly more vocationalism in the areas of Health, Social Care and Early Years provision and are designed to provide vocational enhancement to AS GCE and GCE Biology, Psychology and Sociology. It also provides better progression from GCSE Health and Social Care. Using work-related contexts, innovative teaching and assessment methods, this new award offers a broad introduction to this vocational area. The award is designed to provide a progression route to higher education and further training for employment.

As with other GCEs, AS units and A2 units are equally weighted and, in the GCE awards, each level forms 50% of the total assessment. Aggregation, within and across units, means that candidates can fail a unit but still pass overall and each unit requires 60 guided-learning hours. Assessment at AS is 33% externally tested and 67% by portfolio evidence which is the same as at GCSE but obviously the content of the work produced will be expected to be at a higher level. At A2 level the assessment will include a minimum of 33% externally tested work.

The course will be organised in much the same way as other AS/A2 courses with two teachers from the Health and Social Care Department sharing the teaching for the whole course. At present the staff in the department are, ME [subject leader], AC, KK, RH, KS, EW, KG, AM.

The time spent will be 8hrs per two weeks, 4hrs with each teacher. Students will be expected to arrange their own work experience placements that will be helpful to their portfolio work which counts for 67% of the final AS grade. Work experience will also form part of the A2 course.
