Who is the course for?
The course is designed for students who wish to acquire confidence and the ability to organise groups in games and physical recreation. It is not a qualification to coach or teach but an introduction to organisation. It requires enthusiasm, communication skills and a willingness to lead and assist in groups of all age ranges and physical abilities. The course builds on the work of the Junior Sports Leadership course that some students will have studied in years 10 and 11.
To start this course you do not need to have completed the Junior Sports leadership course.

What does the course consist of and how will it be assessed?
The course consists of 7 compulsory units covering the following topics:

  1. Organisational method
  2. Fitness for Sport
  3. Organisation of Leagues and Competitions
  4. Improvisation, minor games and skill circuits
  5. Games and Activity Experience
  6. Essentials of First Aid
  7. Knowledge of Sports Organisation and Local Facilities

In addition there must be a minimum of 10 hours voluntary service. Students might decide to work with younger children in youth clubs or at local primary schools.

Assessment

This is continuous and requires you to complete, to the satisfaction of your teacher, study of the 7 units, carry out the minimum of 10 hours voluntary service and complete the external assessment. There are no written examinations.

What could I go on to do after this course?

This course will be seen as a great bonus on your CV as it indicates not only an interest in sport and recreation, but an ability to lead others. For those with an interest in outdoor pursuits there is the Basic Expedition Training Award which can be studied in Year 13 after the Community Sports Leadership Course. Please see Mr McBride if this might interest you next year.
