Course details

The BTEC Level 2 Certificates offer a vocational course as an alternative to GCSE. They provide a more practical understanding of the skills and knowledge needed for a career in the music industry, and will suit students who enjoy practical music making. You will be provided with insight into the various employment opportunities available in the sector, and have the opportunity to develop fundamental skills involved in music production. Successful candidates may use the BTEC Level 2 Certificates as a route towards employment or further studies

During the course, you will learn about the music industry through core research units and choose two specialist topics from a list which includes performing, composing, improvising, music technology, making a CD recording and organizing musical events. The course will suit students who prefer a hands-on approach and it will also allow them to progress to higher level qualification such as the BTEC National Diploma.

The Level 2 Certificate is equivalent to one GCSE, the Extended Certificate is equivalent to two GCSEs. Both qualifications are recognized by employers and educational institutions.

How you will be assessed

All BTEC courses are internally assessed from the work completed on the course. There are no externally set examinations.

How will it help me at Post 16?

Students who opt for this course will have learnt many skills that they can either employ directly if they pursue this course/career path at a higher level. Alternatively, they may take away from the course the transferable skills of problem solving, time management, communication and presentation skills as well as organisational and practical knowledge and skills learnt. This qualification will lead on well to BTEC National 3 (currently running at Guthlaxton), or other professional qualifications taken as part of training in employment.
