Course details
This is a practical course aimed at providing learners with knowledge and experience of the technical and production side of performance. Students will have the opportunity to learn about how to set up and operate stage lighting and to understand the use of different lanterns and effects available. Students will have access to the recording studio and Public Address equipment, facilities in the College and will experience backstage areas of at least one theatre in Leicester.
On this course learners can expect to have a more hands on approach within the Performing Arts industry. It may suit those students already studying other Performing Arts subjects or those who shy away from being on the stage and would prefer to work back stage.
The course comprises of three practically assessed coursework units;
- Crewing for Stage Performance – the core unit
- Lighting Operations for Stage Performance
- Mask Making
Students have opportunities throughout the course to provide technical assistance in support of a comprehensive timetable of Performing Arts events, as well as the college musical in March. Students will also be encouraged to watch live theatre, to gain wider knowledge of lighting, sound and set in a professional capacity. Current students have benefited from invaluable work experience at Curve, Leicester.

How you will be assessed
As this is a practical course all learners will be expected to demonstrate their ability to carry out practical tasks in real life work situations. Learners will be assessed through the practical work that they complete. For example, setting, programming and running the lighting for a particular show will be their assessment, supported by video evidence or teacher observation. This will also be the case for Crewing for Stage Performance and Mask Making.
How will it help me at Post 16?
Students who opt for this course will have learnt may skills that they could employ directly if they were to pursue this course/career path at a higher level. They may take away the transferable skills of problem solving, time management, communication and presentation skills as well as organisational and practical knowledge and skills learnt. This qualification can lead onto A Level, BTEC (delete the word National) Level 3 or other professional qualifications taken as part of training and employment.
