The Beauchamp girls, trembling, gripped onto their badminton rackets tightly, as the figures of Kathryn Reynolds, Megan Burnside, Amy Brown and Nadia Kostrewski appeared in their sight. The first match began, with Nadia placing Beauchamp’s top player in an extremely difficult situation. The game was close, though unfortunately resulted in Beauchamp taking the lead. Following Nadia’s high performance, in turn the girls continued to display a tremendously high standard of badminton, making head coach Miss Kaur the proudest coach in South Leicestershire.
Doubles matches were scheduled next, with Kathryn and Megan addressing the court. The mentally-flattened opposition exchanged worried glances, as Megan nodded reassuringly at Kathryn whilst they both pursued the ready position. The first serve was played, and instantly the girls took the lead. The match continued promisingly as did the following fixture, showing off Amy and Nadia’s excellent double partnership. Amy indicated to the other team her ability to read the game with great accuracy when she collapsed after attempting a shot that was aimed the other side of the sports hall, and still managing to regain her position within milliseconds. Throughout it was difficult for spectators to tell who would finish most successfully, and after much debate between the school’s coaches, the points were calculated.
The results revealed Guthlaxton had just missed out on triumph. Being girls of good manner, and respecting the umpiring decisions, the girls congratulated the rivals and embarked on their journey home.
