Local artist, Paul Wright, recently spent three days in the department, working with a group of students from Year 11 and Year 13. Paul showed the students examples of his own work and provided them with a useful insight into how an artist makes a living through exhibiting and selling paintings. Students then focused on painting self portraits using the paintings of Paul Wright as inspiration for their own work.
Textiles artist, Wendy Hughes ran a one day workshop for Textiles students from Years 11 and 12. Wendy, whose workshop is in Oxfordshire, talked about her work and the different techniques she uses in order to transform richly dyed silks into very elaborate hats (including an Ascot Day hat for the Queen) and other accessories. Students were able to work with different fabrics and achieve a range of accessories to include in their GCSE and AS level projects.
The Textile groups enjoyed an exciting trip to the Clothes Show, where they were able to see some interesting new fashions on the catwalk, gaining inspiration for their own work in the future.
We have have recently had a visit from two of the tutors who run the Foundation Course in Art and Design at Leicester College. Year 13 students were able to see a wide selection of work and hear about the different destinations of students after they complete this one year course. Seven of last year’s A level students are currently on the course.
Reminder to Year 11 GCSE Art students:
All coursework, including sketchbooks must be handed in by Friday February 12th.
