Round up of important Sixth Form news.

Year 11 students

Year 11 students interested in applying to the Sixth Form have been visiting B-Block over the past few weeks to chat to current students. They are also invited to sign up to sampling an A level subject which they are considering for September 2012. Students should start to appear in A level classes over the forthcoming weeks and this should allow them to make even better informed choices about their options Post 16. The deadline for Sixth Form applications is Wednesday 7th December. Application forms will be available from 9th November.

UCAS applications are underway. Applications received by the 12th October deadline are guaranteed to be sent by 22nd December. The process is lengthy, ensuring that students’ details are accurate; subject teachers and group tutors compile references as well as checking over students’ personal statement, references are then checked by Heads of House, proof read by a former Deputy Principal before being read over and sent by Mrs Wilson. Students are asked to check UCAS regularly to view the status of their application in case it has been returned to them to correct an error.

In response to feedback from Ofsted, the Sixth Form will be piloting a new monitoring campaign which will focus on punctuality. All students should be in PD at 8.50-9.15am unless they have agreed study release as Year 13 students. Year 13 will have received sticky House coloured dots to add to their mini laminated timetables when they have completed the appropriate study release papers in discussion with their group tutor. All agreed absences from PD will be pre-coded on the electronic Sims register. Students who arrive late will force the sixth form body to lose their sixth form privileges. We will review the effect of the pilot over the next few weeks.

University: Make your future happen

A reminder to students and parents that following Student Review Day on Thursday 10th November, there are two further opportunities to discuss progress with subject teachers on Monday 28th November 4.00-6.30pm and Thursday 8th December 6.00-8.30pm. There will also be a representative from the Government Student Finance Tour Team who will be prepared to answer any queries about financial support for university.

As Christmas approaches, we look forward to the Sixth Form formal Christmas dinner which will again be held at The Stage in Wigston on Monday 19th December. At that time we will also be saying farewell to Mrs Voss, our Post 16 Student Manager who leaves to start a new life in Leamington Spa. Mrs Voss joined us in March 2009 and since then has become a clear asset to the Sixth Form. She will be sadly missed. Students will be involved in the interview process to secure a new Student Manager during November.
