Summer Term Farewells
The final send off for Year 13 went well with over 100 guests at the Grand Hotel, Leicester on 26th May followed by the Year 13 leavers assembly. We have had an exceptional year, with a strong sixth form management team.
Andy Bond, Head Boy joined Guthlaxton College in August 2003, from Water Leys County Primary and Bushloe High School. He entered the sixth form to study Biology, Business, Economics and Geography and started off fairly well as a lively and confident student, participating in class discussion, but with the tendency to mix himself in chatter. Andy has learnt valuable lessons in the sixth form, but he has shown himself to be diligent and well organised, positively determined and unbeatable. He has worked tirelessly to prove to staff, his peers and himself that he is more than capable of representing the college. Andy has applied to study Business Management which he has found to be his clear forte.
Jack Vardy, Deputy Head Boy joined Guthlaxton from Abington High School, having been at Meadow County Primary. He soon got himself involved in Student Council and was involved in charity fundraising, assisting in the preparation of House assemblies and, along with fellow students started Gutho’s Got Talent. In 10 years, students reckon he will be running the world, else perhaps his own Accountancy firm. Jack’s natural modesty and a personality that wins over all who know him is a quality to be proud of. Jack has applied to study Mathematics at Loughborough University. Jack is one of Guthlaxton’s heroes; he will be fondly missed.
Jessica Jane Dunn joined Guthlaxton from Meadows County Primary and Abington High School. She settled well into Year 10 and was an active participant in the Student Council who raised money for FARAJA delivering whole House assemblies. Jess’s commitment to the sixth form has been relentless. She is a confident and ambitious young woman, who, in 10 years, we will most probably see in some high powered job. She has approached the role of Head Girl in a professional and confident manner and has been an excellent ambassador for the college and the sixth form. Jess has helped to create a strong and efficient team, who have come across to other students as supportive and hard working, unphased in their efforts to bond the two year groups and to ensure that students’ time in the sixth form is a memorable one. She has applied to study Media at the University of Derby.
Nicole Dishington, Deputy Head Girl joined Guthlaxton from Abington High School. She describes herself as a smiley girly; for many she is a sweet, caring young woman who is well suited to her chosen pathway of Childhood Studies at Nottingham University. Nicole’s Yearbook profile tells us’ If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always be who you’ve always been’ and for Nicole, she has worked incredibly hard to prove to staff, peers and herself that she has been a reliable, hardworking, honest and effective Deputy Head Girl.
On behalf of the college, I would like to thank them again for their hard work this year and hope that their legacy will remain.
The new sixth form management will soon be finalised with elections taking place in June. We have some strong candidates who have already begun to work together to maintain the excellent standards established. Each candidate has to write a letter of application and deliver a two minute manifesto to Year 12 in assembly. They are able to promote their campaigns before official elections and voting takes place amongst sixth form students. When we return in September, we should be in a position to present to you our plans to see the sixth form move from good to great.
For all students leaving us this year, we wish you well, happiness and success and hope that you will keep in touch.
Year 13 students wishing to make an application through UCAS to university should begin researching courses and attending open days over the summer. As a college, we are able to support students with transport costs, so please ensure that there is evidence of attendance and receipts for petrol and/or train tickets. Students will begin applying through UCAS in college on Friday 8th July- the internal college deadline for applications to be processed is 12th October 2011 (except those applying to Oxbridge, Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry- 1st October).
