We lost 6-2, but the girls showed great positive attitude all the way through the game.  Well done girls.

Superstars 2011

The months of February and March saw the eagerly anticipated introduction of the Superstars event for the sixth form students. The event saw students break off into pairs and attempt to complete a number of skill, speed, stamina and strength sporting challenges. The event started well with the teams working hard to complete the challenges, and creating an interesting tie at the top between a number of pairs, all aiming for the chance to become the Guthlaxton Superstars 2011.

After two weeks of competition, the final event saw pairs trying to complete 600m in a rowing machine in the fastest time possible. The eventual winners for the ladies event were Miss Kaur and Megan Burnside, along with the final men’s winners Mr. Black and Mr. Baldwin, proving that the PE Department are still on top of their game…for now! Special praise must also go out to Jade McLaurin, Amy Brown, Kathryn Reynolds, Tom Gilbert and Mark Jones. Well done to all who took part.

Under 16 Badminton - National Cup & League Update

Centre Parks National Schools Championships
On Monday 28th February, the U16 Boys Badminton team travelled to Nottingham University to represent Leicestershire in the Regional round of the Schools National Championship, with an all expenses paid trip to Centre Parcs beckoning for the winners.  A full strength team of Oli Hoult (1), James Herbert (2), Sam Koelling (3) and Adam Langeveld (4) were in confident mood following their 5-0 whitewash of the Leicestershire schools in the previous round.

The amazing facilities at Nottingham University were matched by the amazing standard of Badminton that took place.  Competing against schools representing Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Derbyshire, the Guthlaxton Boys won three of the four games comfortably, losing only to a very strong Lincolnshire team, containing an England representative along with three other high quality players.

All of the Boys played exceptionally well, and the quality of Badminton was outstanding.  There were superb singles performances by Oli Hoult and James Herbert, backed up by strong doubles play from Sam Koelling and Adam Langeveld throughout the tournament.  The boys were a credit to Guthlaxton College and I congratulate them on their tremendous efforts on the day; unfortunately they just failed to qualify for the next round.

Leicestershire League

The initial stages of the regional Leagues are now coming to a close, with the Under 16 team having gone undefeated throughout and therefore comfortably finishing top of their respective division.  There were particularly strong performances against local rivals Beauchamp and Countesthorpe College; in fact, the boys only lost one game in all of the matches played!  They will now go on to compete against winners of the other Leicestershire regions.
