Spring Update

Sixth Form students have been invited to attend this year’s Life Skills Conference held on Wednesday 30th March at Guthlaxton. It involves workshops on finance, drugs, food and health and supports students in developing their interview skills ready for employment. It is particularly beneficial for students who have chosen to leave the college to move into employment rather than to go on to university.

The Sixth Form Management Team are currently hard at work finalising the arrangements for the end of year student opportunities; namely the purchase of hoodies and/or t-shirts, the sixth form yearbook and photograph, plus the Last Fling. They are also keen to invite more Year 12 students to join their sub committees so that they can ‘learn the ropes’ to sustain the legacy of the developments achieved this academic year.

Year 12 and Year 13 will have received module results from their January exams. For the most part, the results are generally pleasing, but for where there has been an unfortunate blip in a student’s performance, they have been advised to retake modules, particularly for Year 12 at AS level if they are committed to continuing the subject into Year 13.

Students heading off to university in September will be keen to start their applications through Student Finance. The site is now up and running and we already have a number of students who have finalised their applications after attending the small interactive workshops in college on 21st March. There are some useful resources on the college VLE Guthlaxton Sixth Form page, as well as packs available from Student Finance England once they arrive in college. The deadline date for applications is 31st May.

For Year 12 starting to think about university, we will take coaches to the annual Higher Education Convention which this year will be held at Nottingham Trent University on Thursday 7th April. Students need to complete and return a permission slip with a contribution of £4 for transport.

Rachel Hunt in Year 12 is currently taking part in the Pathways to Law programme through the University of Warwick. We have received some pleasing feedback from them about the programme. They are impressed with the enthusiasm, maturity and commitment of all of the students involved who have shown themselves to be excellent ambassadors for involved who have shown themselves to be excellent ambassadors for their respective schools. Students have participated in seven events to date both on and off the university campus. Most recently, they visited the Magistrates Court and have taken part in a Mooting competition. Warwick are looking to launch the next cohort soon, so any students interested in Law could read up on more details at go.warwick.ac.uk/pathwaystolaw.
