Student Finance England

At last, confirmation that the site opens for new students on 16th March 2011 with a deadline for submissions by 31st May 2011. Guthlaxton will be offering support to students and parents hopefully in a workshop after college on Thursday 31st March.

We have three budding medics in Year 12 at present who will attend a Medical Careers Conference at Keele University in March. Students will receive guidance on making an application through UCAS and hear from current medical students to gain insight into the demands of the course and the profession.

Applications to the Sixth Form

Year 11 students will start to receive offers from 21st February. Offers will come in the form of a Conditional Firm offer, subject to a student achieving the necessary entry criteria or on a contract for either attendance and punctuality where this has been raised as a concern in Year 10/11, or for motivation and suitability where students are thought to require some additional support to ease the transition between GCSE and A level. The Guthlaxton Post 16 Student Tracker will monitor students on a contract within the first few weeks and subsequently in timetabled private study time with Mrs Jan Voss, our Post 16 Student Manager.

Students sexual health

Chlamydia is reportedly on the increase, particularly amongst young people. Guthlaxton Sixth Form students have been offered support from the Leicestershire NHS Trust over the past few months with visits from the Chlamydia Nurses, providing free tests and confidential advice.

I Newspaper

Students in tutor groups have the opportunity to read the Times newspaper at least one morning a week, however, feedback has suggested that it is often too daunting to sit down and read during registration. Following this feedback, they will sample the new I newspaper in February. If it is more popular, we may make a move to receive it on a regular basis.
