Students rewarded with trip to meet Amir Khan

Reward Visit Partnership with Network Rail

Guthlaxton College in partnership with Network Rail and Oadby & Wigston Borough Council have benefitted from a unique opportunity. On the 14th January 2011, twenty year 10 students, in acknowledgement of their continuing positive attitudes towards learning, were nominated to participate in a day visit to Bolton along with three members of staff, Mr P Ashton, Mr F Khan and Mrs A Skinner. The visit included a trip to Gloves Gym where they met Amir Kahn and his team, and a guided tour of Bolton Wanderers Football Club, the Reebok Stadium.

They arrived at Gloves (Amir’s gym) and were given background information about the gym.  The students were split into two groups and learnt how to put on boxing gloves, stand, punch, use the punch bags and enjoyed some sparing.

At about 11.30 a.m. Amir arrived and the students had a question and answer session with him. The students were very quiet to begin with but Amir made them feel at ease and soon had them queuing to ask their questions. Amir continued to answer questions for about an hour and then he presented all the students with personalised signed photographs.

The students were then taken to Bolton Wanderers Football Club, where they had a guided tour by a very enthusiastic Bolton Wanderers fan.  He showed the students Amir’s private box and around the stadium, and took them to stand on the platform where some matches was filmed for the television.

The students returned to the coach tired but happy for the return trip to Leicester.

Amir has spent £1 million of his own money on opening the Gloves Community Centre and boxing gym in Bolton to get youths off the streets. In July 2006 Amir became involved in the No Messin' campaign, which promotes child safety around British railways.

We are grateful to our partners Network Rail, Oadby & Wigston Borough Council, Gloves and Bolton Wanderers for this opportunity. It gave the College a chance to recognise and reward students who have adopted positive attitudes.

We hope to secure further rewards to acknowledge the success of our students. Watch this space.
