On Thursday 16th December a group of students from Mr Khan’s Year 11 Science Class were entertained by Leicestershire Poet, Richard Bonfield, who read three poems about Tigers and kindly donated four of his own Poetry Books to the College. Richard also read from “ Tigers In Red Weather “ a book by Ruth Padel, the great, great, granddaughter of Charles Darwin, all of which highlights the plight of wild tigers whose population have reduced from 100,000 to just 3,200 in less than a century.
Richard was born and educated in Leicester and has over 300 poems published to his credit. He is passionate about wildlife and conservation and he is the Poet in Residence for the Born Free Foundation, a charitable organisation dedicated to saving wild animals and their environment.
Mr Khan’s Science students are undertaking a project to “Adopt a Tiger” and the Born Free Foundation are able to facilitate this. Born Free is also a member of the International Tiger Coalition working to enforce the International Trade Ban and phase out tiger farms and reduce the demand for wild tiger parts and products.
We hope to be able to “Adopt a Tiger “currently living in a Tiger Sanctuary in India and we will receive regular updates as to how “our “Tiger is progressing – watch this space! Many thanks again to Richard for sharing his time with us and making his poetry come alive.
Richard may be contacted through his web site at richardbonfield.com and the Born Free team at bornfree.org.uk.
