Guthlaxton College Rugby

Guthlaxton College Rugby has seen considerable improvement and success this academic year so far.

The Year 10 team is looking stronger, with the students gaining entry to the County Cup on their first attempt, a feat not achieved at the College for many years. Having been drawn into a group with English Martyrs, Lutterworth and Soar Valley. Guthlaxton played in the opening match against English Martyrs, beating them convincingly 17 points to 12, putting us into the final. We later discovered we would be playing Lutterworth after their victory over Soar Valley. However it was not to be Guthlaxton’s day, where despite immense pressure, Guthlaxton could not break down the Lutterworth defence, losing 5-0. However second place was enough to put Guthlaxton College into the County Cup, so well done boys.

The Year 11 team has also shown incredible stride and success this year. Having played 5 games, winning 4 and losing one. These have included an 83-0 beating of Countesthorpe and a 38-10 win over King Edward VII from Coalville. Within the County Cup qualifiers’, the lads have also seen success, again qualifying for the County Cup for the first time. From a difficult group, comprising of Lutterworth, Robert Smyth and John Cleveland College, Guthlaxton knew they had a tough day in store. Guthlaxton met Robert Smyth in the first round, and after a close match, Guthlaxton squeezed through 3-0, putting them into the final. Again they waited on the outcome for the match between Lutterworth and JCC, which emerged with Lutterworth on top, putting us in a final against Lutterworth. Again Guthlaxton exerted great pressure, but could not cross the white wash, losing 5-0 in the final, again as with the Year 10’s second place was enough for qualification into the County Cup. Well done.

The first XV at Guthlaxton have also done well this year. Playing some very physical games, Guthlaxton has been pushing hard facing the best Schools and Colleges within Leicestershire, in addition, we have entered into the National Cup, facing many teams from the county and afar, this unfortunately saw Guthlaxton bow out in round three of the National Cup, in a thrilling game against King Henry VIII form Coventry. Still the team has shown great strides, strength and teamwork which sets them up nicely for after Christmas for the County Plate, well done.

U18 Girls Badminton Guthlaxton Vs Leicester Grammar

After months of vigorous training schedules, the day of the Leicester Grammar Vs Guthlaxton College badminton match arrived.  The team consisted of four highly experienced girls, whose badminton skills are arguably equal to those in the England squad.

Kirsty Seal, famous for her ’drop shots’ and powerful smashes, was first to take the court. A remarkable battle took place, with Kirsty showing spectators her undoubtedly remarkable skills. The display of such sheer determination and resilience lead Kirsty to a win. Watch out, we could be seeing Kirsty in the Olympics in the near future.

Megan Burnside, the feistiest member of the squad, was up next. Her smooth swagger accompanied with her fighting spirit was sure to give her the edge. She instantly caused the opposition uneasiness as she attained the ready position, and as everyone predicted, she became the mighty victor. As she departed the playing zone she took a proud bow, to which the crowd conducted a Mexican wave in her honor.

Jade Mclaurin was to play next. She stepped onto the court in such a manner that all those in the room, coaches included, appeared petrified. Throughout her difficult match, onlookers sat nervously watching, all unsure of who would take the glory. The final result saw Leicester Grammar’s first victory, however Jade’s confidence was not affected by this; she is a true hero.

Finally, Amy Brown, the secret weapon, took to the court. From the first serve, she troubled her opponent, showing boundless energy and aggression. Like the rest of her team mates, her skills left all those surrounding her trembling. After a tense match, Leicester grammar achieved their second win, but as they say: “It is always advisable to be a loser if you cannot become a winner.”

The Guthlaxton girls maintained their exceptionally high standard throughout their doubles matches, leading them to a clear overall victory.
Well done girls!  Guthlaxton Win 5-3

U19’s Table Tennis – County Champions

A huge congratulations goes to Alex O’Connell, Jamie Mullineaux, Conor Wilde and Adil Rashid who have successfully qualified to represent Leicestershire schools in a regional tournament. The Guthlaxton boys beat tough opposition from public and private schools in the county, beating their closest rival Beauchamp comfortably. Rigorous training continues after school on Mondays and Tuesdays in the gym for anybody who is interested in joining the dominant 1st team or maybe increasing competition for the 2nd team. The lads now travel to Grantham to represent our school in January, whilst aiming to continue their ongoing success in the league.

Guthlaxton u19 girls Netball

The u19 girls once again put in a really strong performance in the County Tournament. Arriving at Leicester Grammar in a confident mood, Captain Megan Burnside worked hard to motivate the team and get them ready for the first match. In the group stage, Guthlaxton showed they were going to be a threat, starting to work well as a team. The mid court players of Megan Burnside and Kathryn Reynolds gave some excellent passes, giving good opportunities for the shooters  Jade McLaurin, Anna Page and Sarah Ward, who all worked excellently in the circle. In the group stage Guthlaxton beat Beauchamp, Ratcliffe and the De-Lisle, earning a place in the quarter finals.

In the quarter-finals, Guthlaxton were drawn against Uppingham. Right from the start Guthlaxton were determined and this was shown by the excellent defending by Tammy Copp and Amy Brown and Becky Borrows. This limited Uppingham’s chances and gave Guthlaxton a 4-2 win.

The semi final was a very close game against Oakham, who had won every previous game. Oakham were really strong attacking players and Guthlaxton initially struggled to keep possession. However they fought back hard and the game ended 4-4, which meant it went into extra time. The girls fought hard but Oakham’s outstanding shooting proved impossible to overcome and the final score was 7-5 to Oakham. Although disappointing the girls played some fantastic netball and as usual were a pleasure to watch.
