In the third round of the national schools tournament the girls knew the significance of this game and what a triumphant win would mean. They did not fail in providing an exciting match for all to see with a magnificent victory. Even with a delay from the opposing team, Guthlaxton kept their sharp mind set and stayed focused. Both teams had attacking moments but with a strong solid defence of Megan, Abbey, Olivia and Amy, Guthlaxton denied Orton Longueville School of a goal. Instead, the girls powered the ball into the back of the net with Heather Stewart’s mighty strike, boosting them to a lead of 1-0. With the lead the girls relaxed a little and lost focus allowing a sneaky goal to pass by, setting the score to 1-1. Guthlaxton did not like this and fought back putting the opposition in their place with another superb goal by Kathryn, chesting the ball over the line, leaving the pitch at half time with a score of 2-1.

Come the second half a one goal difference was not enough for Guthlaxton and they decided to extend it. Their attacking tempo flourished, constantly blasting shots on goal. The Orton Longueville School goalie was the only thing keeping them in the game. However, she was unable to produce anything worthy of stopping the ball from the beautiful strike of Tammy Copp’s foot. After this rise to 3-1 there was a scoring sensation, balls flung left, right and centre until they reached the destination of Orton Longueville School’s goal courtesy of Heather Stewart. We thought it would stay at 4-1, but again Guthlaxton proved us wrong with a fifth goal from the head of Megan Burnside. Still the greedy goal scoring team decided one last goal was in needed to put the score at 6-1, giving the girls an amazing result to proceed to the next round. With this final goal, Heather Stewart managed to get her hat trick.

The girls started the game in the rain very well. With both teams equally matched, Megan Footman was tested in goal in the first 5 minutes but managed to save a few passing shots. Codie Applebee and Coral Haines were up to their tricks again and played the ball in the attacking half for while, and had some unsuccessful attempts at goal. After 20 minutes Countesthorpe finally broke through our strong defense and scored.

The girls then started to fight back with Tasha Croper finally giving her great left footed pass, and as normal fed the ball to Codie Applebee who was very heavily marked. Codie had one attempt during this stressful time and got the ball past the goalkeeper.

Half time score 1-1. The captain Olivia Letten-Crowe and vice captain Lydia Morris helped the team to lift their spirits. Second half both teams where fighting for the 4th round place, our defense worked hard denying Countesthorpe of any room to score. Fifteen minutes from the end Countesthorpe scored through a gap in our defense. The girls still kept their heads high and kept trying hard. Codie at this time was given a few unlucky offside decisions. Final score 2-1.
