Sixth Form  Management Team

The efforts of the Sixth Form Management team this year have continued with gusto. The new structure of having Sub-Committees for Social events, Charity, Premises and Volunteering is working well with both Year 13 and Year 12 students putting themselves forward to chair the committees and be part of the Student Voice at Guthlaxton.

Volunteering

On the 24th September, we were lucky enough to be asked to join in the first awards evening at the Space Centre with Vinspire, an organisation who encourage people to volunteer. We joined the programme in the Summer Term of 2010 and by the beginning of September the following students have been awarded certificates for volunteering:

Vimpact for 100 hours of volunteering

  • Kelly Burfoot
  • Benjamin Clarke-Monks
  • Jon Musson

It is also pleasing to note that of the 370 students in our Sixth form there are approximately 200 students who volunteer in some way in our local community.

Charity Fundraising

Sixth Form students have made a superb start to the year. 3 events have already been held which include:

  • Purple Day for the Charity Lymphoma, raising £249.43
  • Jeans for Genes day on October the 1st, raising £305.57
  • Pink day for Breast Cancer Awareness on the 29th October, raising a whopping £525.52.

So with just 3 events the students have already raised £1081.52; congratulations to all students involved.

Applying to Guthlaxton Sixth Form

This week in Year 11 assemblies, the Sixth Form Management team have been talking to Year 11 students about their experiences as a student in Guthlaxton Sixth Form and talking about the many opportunities open to our students.

In the week beginning the 15th November Mr Coles, Deputy Principal and myself will be meeting with Year 11 students to inform them about the post 16 study pathways that are open to them and the courses that we have on offer.

On Friday the 19th November, students will be given their application forms for Guthlaxton Sixth form and talked through how to complete the form accurately and correctly.

Student Successes

YASS (Young Applicants in Schools Scheme)

Congratulations to Maariyah Seedat who has successfully completed an Open University level 1, 10 credit module in Start Writing Fiction. Well done Maariyah!

Pathways To Law

Pathways to Law is an award winning programme run by Warwick University, supported and sponsored by a number of top Law firms. This year over 150 students across Year 12 applied to the course. I am pleased to announce that Rachael Hunt has been accepted as one of only 50 students who are now participating on the programme to include work placements in Law firms, attend a Summer school with Mooting competitions and visits to Crown  and Magistrates Courts to name but a few of the opportunities. Well done Rachael!
