The library gets a makeover
The new Learning Resource Centre (LRC) opened this month after a large renovation project which took place over the summer. The new centre has been fully refurbished and decorated and has access for up to 80 students at any one time. The centre is open from 8.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. where at peak times the centre can receive over 400 visitors a day! The LRC has a vast range of supplies including 30 wireless netbooks, 30 new state of the art computers, DVD’s journals, newspapers and magazines.
Our primary objective is to provide a high quality learning and working environment for our diverse range of students. The centre also provides quiet educational games such as drafts, chess and scrabble. The LRC has high quality networked printers in black and white and colour, as well as scanning and photocopying facilities. The computers are essential in order to provide access to the college VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) which is significant to every student’s learning.
The Learning Resource Centre has a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere and is managed by Mrs Bradshaw and her assistant Mrs Vilcins. The centre is supervised at all times and our dedicated team are always very willing and ready to help. The centre can also be used for conference purposes with plasma screens for group presentations. Rolling messages will keep students up to date with exactly what is going on across the college along with BBC and Sky news throughout the day.
As Deputy Principal Rob Coles said “Guthlaxton recognises that if we want our students to achieve outstanding results they require outstanding facilities”. A new year 12 student has commented “the improvement over the summer has been outstanding. The library before hand I thought was very good; the new Learning Resource Centre now is excellent”.
