Literacy and visiting authors at Guthlaxton

Bali Rai was born in Leicester and has become a prolific writer of children's fiction since his first novel (un)arranged marriage in 2001. This novel has also become his most accredited piece of work. Amongst his other works are 'Dream On,' 'The Crew,' 'What's your problem?,' and most recently 'Concrete Chips.'

On Thursday 24th June Guthlaxton was fortunate to have successful author Bali Rai visit for the morning.  Bali hosted a morning of literacy activities in the college library; discussing his writing and novels and literacy in general before leading a session on creative writing for college students.

Bali’s discussion on reading and his advice on how to write creatively enthralled the students who talked informally with him regarding his writing and techniques.  Later Bali stopped for an informal chat with students, photo opportunities and autographs.

On a similar note the previous day had been an exciting opportunity for our college literary enthusiast with Guthlaxton’s MOLES reading group visiting Bushloe High School for the morning to meet with author Alex Wheatle MBE.  Alex entertained the students in discussing his life story and motivations for writing.  He then chaired a smaller, more personal question and answer session regarding his writing.  Here he spoke of the importance of reading and shared writing techniques with our budding writers as to how he generates ideas for his novels.

These activities were so successful that we plan to organise similar visits next year for our students.
