Athletics

May saw the start of the track and field athletics season with the first event being the initial round of the National Track & Field Cup. Although neither the boys’ team nor the girls’ team progressed into the next round there were some notable successes.
At the County championships there were some excellent results and congratulations go to Freya Vincent who not only won her event but has also qualified to represent the County at the English Schools Championships in Birmingham in July.
Tom Lilley won the senior boys Long Jump, breaking the 6metre mark for the first time; Matthew Horrocks and Joe Bailey finished 3rd in their finals, Sophie Hollis was 5th as was Cameron Favell; Andy Bolley 7th and Josh McManus 7th in their finals.

U16 Boys Badminton – Season Report

The U16 Boys Badminton Team, consisting of Oli Hoult, James Herbert, Sam Koelling, Adam Langeveld and Mark Sutsakhon had an excellent 2009/10 campaign. Having been placed in a strong regional group, the boys did remarkably well, losing only one game throughout the entire season but just missing out on the next round. With all of the boys moving into Year 11 and therefore still eligible to represent the U16s next season, expectations will be high. I would like to thank all of the boys for their commitment and efforts throughout the Year, well done!

U16 Girls Badminton- End of Season

The girls have worked very well this year to be the regional winners, they played Leicester Grammar, Countesthorpe, Beauchamp College and Sir Jonathan North. They won all their games and represented Guthlaxton College very well. Next year I hope they work extremely hard in the U19 League which will be slightly more challenging.
Team: Amy Brown (Captain), Kathryn Reynolds, Megan Burnside, Tammy Copp and Danielle Weston.

Under 18 Girls Badminton - End of Season

This year the girls played very well. They won most of their games but lost out in a narrow defeat against WQE II. The over standing at the end of the league was the girls came third in Region 2 of the Leicestershire Schools Badminton Association.
Other colleges that the girls played where Leicester High, Leicester Grammar, City of Leicester and Beauchamp College.
Once again, well done Girls.
Team: Emily Raines (Captain) , Lara Langeveld, Sophie Coley , Nadia Kostrzewski and Megan Burnside.

U18 Boys Badminton – Season Report

The U18 Boys Badminton Team was a mixture of U18s and U16s, but nevertheless put in some solid performances in the Regional stages. Ryan Mills put in some excellent performances for the team as he came up against some of the finest players in the County. Ashley Mason and Ben Konarski also put in fine performances, particularly in the singles matches, to beat a strong Leicester Grammar side. It has been a pleasure working with the boys this season and I thank them for their time and effort, especially around exam times.

U19 Boys Basketball

Guthlaxton U19 Boys Basketball team got off to flying start with two early games being cancelled. This then created an enthralling opening fixture against a highly favoured Burleigh squad. The Guthlaxton boys in high spirits met a very dominant team and fought to concede a narrow loss 98-10. Three fixtures followed with the squad continuing to work hard in training and unfortunately losing narrowly in all their fixtures. The final game of the season was away at Gateway College. This proved to be the icing on the cake for the squad, which had come such a long way from their opening fixture of the season. A memorable performance for Dan Williams, scoring 17 points in a dominant performance ensured Guthlaxton were victorious 45 v 25 Gateway.
The squad developed into a team as the year progressed and a huge congratulations should go to Sunil Chauhan, Siten Patel, Lakhan Callo, Ben Huggins, Dan Williams, James Firth and Jingyao Wang.

U15 Boys Basketball

The Guthlaxton U15 Boys Basketball team made an exceptional start to their season with a comprehensive domination of three visiting teams in a tournament hosted by Guthlaxton. This then paved the way for the start of the Basketball season, with an opening fixture against Bosworth. Aris Cooper showed tremendous skill to finish with 21 points helping Guthlaxton to win a narrow victory.
Another close victory against Burleigh, with 14 points from Connor Atkinson, ensured Guthlaxton were 6 for 0 at the start of the year. The single loss of the season was at the hands of the eventual winners Lancaster Boys. Two more return leg fixtures against Burleigh and Bosworth rewarded the proud Guthlaxton team with a home fixture against Bosworth College. The Semi-final was a very close encounter with both teams exchanging scores during the first half.
Two memorable pieces of brilliance from Matt Horrocks gave Guthlaxton a clear sight at victory within the final quarter; however a strong comeback from Bosworth meant the scores were level with four minutes remaining.
Finally, the breakthrough was made by Connor Atkinson, closely followed by Harry Panayioutou to give victory to the hosts, Guthlaxton 38 v 37 Bosworth.
The league final showdown against a very strong Lancaster squad was a memorable occasion for the boys from Guthlaxton and unfortunately, in a tight encounter, we finished runners-up. A tremendous season with a very talented and dedicated squad. Congratulations to every player involved, the future looks very promising for Guthlaxton’s Basketball Team.

Under 15 Football.

A very successful year for the newest team at the Guthlaxton Boys Football academy. Unfortunately no silver wear to speak off with their only two defeats of the year coming in the cup competitions. This squad has started to come together and create some football to be really proud off and ensure that the future of Football at Guthlaxton College is in safe hands.
There have been many noticeable successes and performances throughout the season but here are a few; first ever game, losing 2-1 with ten minutes to go and winning 4-2. Luke Dalby’s forty yard screamer away at Kingsthorpe; Kieran Machins last minute winner at Northampton School for boys; winning 6-5 in extra-time away at Blue Coat with Kieran Machin in goal for part of the game. Harry Panayiotous’ first touch of the ball resulting in a goal against Lutterworth and then his Messi chip. Too many to mention really.
The squad has been made up off many different players, all contributing towards a great first season: Fabian Blake HBK, Josh Mansfield DKK, Spencer Wileman HTS, Ashley Kirby HAV, Jordan Reynolds HNC, Luke Dalby DAK, Joe Thompson HRA, Zak Winstone WCN, Alex Panayiotou DRF, Curtis Close WMG, Mason Hurst GCA, Josh Morrall GHV, Kieran Machin GHV, Remi Davis DTM, Harry Panayiotou WAS, Harry Whitaker DCL, Isaac Timson GHR, , Mason Brown DSL.
Looking forward to next season where a full on attack on the Treble is already being prepared for.

Under 19’s Football.

Another good year for Guthlaxton's premier team. They have really started to gel together and play some lovely football with a large proportion of the team being year 12 students. This bodes well for next year as the current year 11’s will add more strength and depth to the team.
Unfortunately the Under 19’s missed out on winning the league on goal difference; slightly annoying when they conceded a last minute equaliser against Beauchamp who went on to appear in the Cup final. Here's hoping for a great season next year, with a league and cup double the team’s ambition.

Under 16 Boys Football

The U16’s Boy’s footballers started the year in superb form by comfortably winning their first three games and drawing their fourth. Their first loss came in the semi final of the County Cup where they narrowly lost to John Cleveland Community College in a penalty shootout after extra time. The team experienced some hard battles in their quest to win the league title, but a change in formation half way through their campaign saw them top the league comfortably. This put them in the semi final for the League Cup where they came up against a Lancaster Boys team that reached the semi final of the National competition. The lads were up for the challenge and dominated the match winning by their biggest margin, 7 – 1 putting them into the final. The last outing for this team could not have been more fitting for them, at last a Cup final. The team were superbly led by captain and top goal scorer Jordan Small, who had scored in every game so far. The lads were professional from start to finish during a hard fought final against Robert Smyth College. They played out of their skins and were a credit to themselves and Guthlaxton College drawing the game 1 – 1. However it was just not meant to be as they could not find the net in extra time where they ended up losing 3 – 1. It was a sour end to what was an enjoyable and successful year for the U16 footballers.
Top goal scorer: Jordan Small (13)
Squad: Jordan Small, Sam Dunkley, Ben Deacon, James Orton, James MacLean, Adam Pinkoski, Josh Curtis,  Max Anderson, Mark Jones, Jack Crisp, Alex Brennan, Tom Gilbert, Gary Stephens, Scott Foster, Alex Bingley, Ryan Parry, Harry Panaylotou, Fabion Blake

Under 19 Girls Football – Season Report

Guthlaxton again had a very solid season in the Under 19 age group, despite the fact that only 2 players were not eligible for the under 16 age group too. With so many young players, it was always going to be tough to achieve similar success to the previous year. The girls started in the u19 National Cup with a 10-1 away win at Lutterworth, immediately boosting confidence within the team. In the second round they showed their dominance with a 16-0 win over Archbishop School from Birmingham. The third round saw them come up against previous finalists West Bridgford and with a depleted squad due to injuries, this proved to be too much. Despite battling hard, they eventually lost 5-2. They were then able to focus on the U19 cup. With opponents Bosworth and Countesthorpe Colleges both withdrawing from the matches against us, the girls were handed a semi-final spot against Beauchamp. In a close game, they lost 2-1, even though they fought until the end, hoping to get the goal to take it to extra time. A good season for the girls and the team is looking very strong for next year, with only one player set to leave.
Squad: Zara Cook, Olivia Crowe, Lydia Morris, Megan Downes, Jade McLaurin, Heather Stuart, Megan Burnside, Tammy Copp, Rheo Smith (c), Abbey Wells, Kathryn Reynolds, Kayleigh Butlin, Amy Woodford, Amy Thorpe, Megan Footman.

Under 16 Girls Football – season report

After experiencing such a successful season last year, it was difficult to see just how the girls could match this, let alone improve on it. With a large intake of Year 10 players to go alongside the current Year 11’s, the squad looked strong, despite players being moved out of their comfortable positions. Without the chance of a friendly, they were thrown straight into County Cup action against JCC. Despite a shaky start, confidence soon grew, coming out 6-0 winners. A bigger test was to come against local rivals Beauchamp in the semi final. A closely fought 2-1 win for the girls gave them a place in the final against Bosworth College. The final, played on the magnificent pitch at Welbeck, proved to be an exciting match. Guthlaxton took an early lead, which they held on to throughout the whole match, winning 1-0 and retaining their crown as County Cup winners.
Guthlaxton then represented Leicestershire in the last 64 of the National Cup. An away trip to Ecclesbourne School in Derbyshire with a depleted squad proved to be too much and after taking a 2-0 lead into half time, eventually lost 3-2.
Having to put this disappointment behind them the girls now needed to focus on the League Cup. Having come runners-up last year, they were hoping to go one better and complete the double in Leicestershire. This started well with a 5-0 away victory away at William Bradford. The next match at John Cleveland was to be the crunch match, with JCC topping the League. JCC took the lead early on from an own goal, but it was in this match that the girls first showed their courage and teamwork, coming back to win 2-1. The rest of the matches in the group were more of a formality with the girls showing their dominance. A walkover over Robert Smyth, a 4-0 home win against Lutterworth and a 5-0 home win against Countesthorpe saw them reach the final, which turned out to be repeat of the County Cup final.
With last years disappointment still in the back of the mind, Guthlaxton went out and demonstrated just how much they had improved over the season. A 4-0 win capped off a fantastic League and Cup double, made better by the fact they had a 100% record and only conceded 2 goals in the process of winning both trophies throughout the season. An excellent season for the girls and a very proud manager!
Squad: Zara Cook, Olivia Crowe, Lydia Morris, Megan Downes, Jade McLaurin (c), Heather Stuart, Megan Burnside, Tammy Copp, Kathryn Reynolds, Kayleigh Butlin, Amy Woodford, Jade Lyons, Amy Thorpe, Megan Footman, Lucy Cyhanchuk.

U16 Rugby

This season has seen the U16 rugby team at Guthlaxton make the step up, from a good team, to a very good team. The boy’s have shown complete commitment in every game they’ve played, showing flare, skill, determination and great teamwork, unlike any other team at the College. The boys have raked up wins this season against Robert Smyth, Ashby Grammar School, Rawlins, Longslade and Countesthorpe Colleges, with the latter being special, as this gives Guthlaxton a clean sweep over their local opposition for this team over the past two years. In addition the U16’s progressed to the latter stages of the County Cup, going out in the Semi –Finals against Lutterworth College by 4 points. This team has given everything for two years, and will go down as one of the best in Guthlaxton’s recent history.
Team: Charlie McAteer, Rob Bailey, John Merola, Josh Kirk, Daniel Harrison, Reece Johnson, Garry Stephens, James Maclean, Saber Ali, Matthew Willemsen, Jaideep Dhaliwal, Ant Flude, Kingsley McDiarmid, Sam Dunkley, Adam Carpenter, Jake Lewis, Oliver Stone, Owen Williams, Ben Phipps, Daniel Malik, Sam Underwood, Jordan Small.

Under 15 Rugby

This year has been a good year for Guthlaxton’s newest crop of players. Starting this year with a gripping game against Ashby Grammar School, the boy’s have grown to become feared opponents within Leicestershire Schools rugby. This season has seen the boys show off some fine skills, which have also turned into good wins, against Bosworth, Countesthorpe, Longslade, and King Edward Colleges. Within the County Cup, Guthlaxton managed to progress to the Quarter Finals, loosing out to a big Robert Smyth team. Key players this year have been the difference, and the PE Department are looking forward to next season already, where Mr Quail is expecting the boys to go further in the cup competition, which is easily within their reach. All of which points to an exciting season next year!
Team: Joel Jackman, Sean Brabham, Shane Aitchison, Josh McManus, Tom Hudson, Josh Chamberlain, Jordan Hames, Jake O’Brien, Daniel Ray, Tom Heggs, Will Burdett Derby, Jack Smith, Kieran Machin, Sam Burton, Salmau Khan, Jack Dishington, Rhys James, Freitas Lynch, Austin Munday, Tom Hayes

U15 Girls Netball

The U15 netball girls have worked hard to develop as a team over the course of the year. The County Tournament resulted in a difficult draw with schools including Oakham and Ratcliffe. The girls played hard but were unable to qualify for the next round. They also played in the Leicestershire league which resulted in fixtures against some of the top schools in the county. Several games were very close, with an outstanding team performance against Robert Smyth which resulted in a very close defeat. However with confidence high the girls built on this and secured victories against Beauchamp, Bosworth and an outstanding 14-2 win against Lutterworth. Having to play a number the matches without some of the key players due to other commitments made consistency within the team difficult, however the team finished 5th in the League, which is a result the team should be proud of.
U15 Team: Georgie Clayton (Captain), Heather Schalkwyk, Sophie Hollis, Lia Jones, Lauren Shellard, Lauren Harrison, Suzanne Buswell, Danielle Smith, Danielle Boat.

U16 Girls Netball.

The Under 16 girls came into the season with high expectations being the current County Champions. The County Tournament early in the year saw victories against JCC, Robert Smyth, Dixie Grammar and Bosworth in the first round. Bosworth were the opponents for the quarter finals and the girls worked solidly to win a semi final place against Ratcliffe College. However lack of team play and some unlucky injuries produced a performance below which the girls are capable and the girls were unable to defeat a strong Ratcliffe team.
However they have continued to work hard throughout the year and have produced some outstanding results in the Netball League. With convincing wins against teams such as Bosworth and Sir Jonathon North, and a 20-6 victory against JCC the girls went into the penultimate game of the season knowing that they could win the league. However once again injuries affected the consistency of the team. Against Leicester Grammar the girls showed excellent determination under Captain Kathryn Reynolds and came back from losing at half time to tie the game 8-8. However despite keeping the game very tight throughout the girls were unable to beat Leicester High and the defeat by 1 goal nudged the girls into second place overall. The girls have been a credit to the school all season and are determined to come back with a victory in the league and tournament next season.
U16 team: Kathryn Reynolds (Captain) Jade McLaurin, Nadia Kostrzewski, Amy Brown, Sarah Ward, Megan Burnside, Tammy Copp, Becky Borrows.
