Guthlaxton Sixth Form in June 2010
It gives me great pleasure to be able to announce the results of the elections for Head Boy and Head Girl 2010-11. 120 students in Year 12 turned out to vote for candidates who first led an election campaign, complete with banners, badges, stickers and rosettes as well as an assembly where they presented their manifestos and were involved in student question time.
The elected representatives are as follows:
Head Boy: Andrew Bond
Head Girl: Jessica Dunn
Deputy Head Boy: Jack Vardy
Deputy Head Girl: Taylor May
Their first official engagement is to attend the meeting of the full governing body on Monday 21st June to represent the interests of students at Guthlaxton and following that, to present themselves to the new Year 12 during Induction. I am confident that it will prove to be a productive year with a strong team who already have experience of working together. In future years, we will continue to insist that students in Year 12 wishing to stand for election are already members of the Sixth Form Management Team who have collected at least 10 Task Force Hours service to the College.
Sam Ashwell and Georgina Bishop have both been awarded places on Academic Enrichment programmes at the University of Nottingham and with the Sutton Trust following their application and supporting reference from the college. They will be involved in summer schools, followed by e-mentoring, revision classes and a graduation event. Well done to them both and good luck- this opportunity will be beneficial towards their UCAS application and entry into university 2011.
Higher Education Event- 16th June 2010
About 80 students and their parents/carers attended this event in June with representatives from the Universities of Coventry, De Montfort, Nottingham Trent and Northampton. This is the fourth annual event of this kind and well worth the effort as both students and parents found the information received to be beneficial towards their decisions about applying to university. Parents took away with them a parent guide to UCAS, as well as a Big map, detailing all the universities across the country and a handout from the University of London about making an application. Year 13 students wishing to make an application should begin researching courses and attending open days at universities over the summer.
As a college, we are able to support students with transport costs, so please ensure that there is evidence of attendance and receipts for petrol and/or train tickets. Students will begin applying through UCAS in college on Friday 9th July- the internal college deadline for applications to be processed is 13th October 2010 (except those applying to Oxbridge, Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry- 1st October)
