Guthlaxton Sixth Form in May 2010

Higher Education Evening at Guthlaxton Tuesday 15th June from 6.00pm

The common room continues to be an area of development in the sixth form block. Thanks to the ICT Department, we now have some excellent photographs on display of recent events and with the use of a new hi-tech printer we can update these on a regular basis. For Induction in July, there should be some great photos from the Spring Term charity events and the Last Fling. We have also put in our first order to update the furniture, so by September there should be a huge improvement. Mrs Wilson and Mrs Voss will invite some of the new Year 13 students to finalise the layout in August before the new Year 12 arrive. We are also in the process of renovating two smaller rooms which will be used as bookable work spaces for groups of students or for teaching. It will mean that workshops on a range of issues can take place during the day or after college. Mrs Voss will offer the first session in June on personal statement writing for the current Year 12 who will be reflecting on their decisions to apply to university for entry in 2011.

The current Year 12 and 13 had their final fund raising event of the year on Friday 14th May in memory of Mrs Hall, mother of Natalie in Year 13 who lost her fight against cancer. At Natalie’s request, students wore an item of yellow in support of LOROS who were a tremendous help to her and her family. We raised a whopping total of £386.39. Natalie is looking forward to starting university in September, we wish her well.

The Sixth Form Management Team are in a constant period of transition as the current Year 13 begin to prepare to wrap up their time at Guthlaxton and the current Year 12 start to take the lead. There will be a leavers' assembly for Year 13 on Wednesday 26th May with everyone wearing their leavers hoodies or t-shirts, embellished with a huge 10 on the reverse containing all the names of students in their year group. There will also be a presentation of memorable events through photographs and music. Their final week will hold the Last Fling which will be at the Grand Hotel on Friday 28th May.

The current Year 12 will mainly be in college for exams and revision sessions for the two weeks of 18th and 24th May. On their return in June, students wishing to be considered for the roles of Head Boy and Head Girl will start the application process, culminating in the presentation of their manifesto to the year group on Thursday 17th June and formal voting at lunchtime. Year 12 will need to consider what it means to be Head Boy/Girl to know who they will vote for on the day:

  • Does the candidate have the necessary leadership qualities to get the best out of people and to work as a team?
  • Will they represent the student body in Years 10, 11, 12 and 13?
  • Do they have a strong sense of responsibility?
  • Do they have the authority and confidence to fight for improvements to the Sixth Form?
  • Have they earned respect from students and staff throughout Year 12?
  • Are they academically able to cope with the pressures and challenges that they will face as Head Boy and Head Girl?
  • Do they have a strong personality? Do they have the stamina to make important decisions in the interest of the College? Will they put words into action or is it all just talk? Can they step up to the challenge of protecting the reputation of the College when required?

Sixth Form Induction, Monday 5th - Wednesday 7th July

The Sixth Form Induction will soon be with us; current Year 11 students need to ensure that they have booked and paid at the college cashier for a place on the bowling trip if they want to join the new Year 12 for some healthy competition. Students will receive information on how to be a successful Sixth Form student; the college dress code; enrichment activities; plus sample A level lessons. Year 11 students attending the induction should be smartly dressed in business wear; no jeans, no joggers; no t-shirts, no vest tops. Boys should wear smart trousers, a shirt and tie and girls should wear either a skirt, a dress or trousers with a smart top with their shoulders covered.

Farewell to those students leaving us; we wish you future success, good health and happiness. Take care and stay in touch. We love to see ex-students back to tell us their news.
