Over the past month Guthlaxton Table Tennis Team has had further success both in competitions and presentations. In the recent Leicestershire Schools Individuals event Alex O’Connell fought back after a narrow defeat to become the overall winner of the ‘Plate’ Event whilst Conor Wilde was unlucky to miss out on the semi-finals finishing fifth in the main Event (Jamie Mullineaux could not attend). Towards the end of the Junior League season, the boys also performed well as they managed to add another two wins to their total meaning that, by the end of the second half of the season, they improved on their fifth place finish in the first half of the season. This increase of form has also been evident in their adult team as they have helped their team move from tenth (of 12) towards mid-table.
At the beginning of March all of the team were invited to County Hall for the ‘Leicestershire & Rutland Racket Sports Celebration Event.’ By the end of the night Conor had collected one of just four ‘Individual Fair Play’ awards whilst Jamie and Alex received the two prestigious U18 volunteer/leadership awards available for Leicestershire Table Tennis.
With another individual competition arriving in March Conor and Alex both again provided excellent performances (Jamie again unavailable!!!) with both reaching the Under-100 (grading) handicap final with relative ease. In an excellent spectacle Conor eventually ran out as the winner with a 13-11 win in the fifth decider with three sets overall going to deuce.
With the Junior League season over the three team members now have just the conclusion of their adult league season and Knighton Park club championships to look forward to. Good luck to all!
Coaching sessions will be ending shortly into the new term due to the exam season.
