Common Room gets a face lift!
Students voted on the VLE and in assembly for the colours bright orange and subtle yellow for the Sixth Form Common Room. It was painted during half term, thanks to Brian Perrin and his team. The whole room now looks energised and more welcoming. The next phase will be to agree on the type of furniture; students are already thinking of black sofas and wooden dining tables with black chairs similar to images they have seen of the newly renovated library at the University of Leicester. We do need some funky pictures/images though, so there is the idea of consulting with a local artist to get students together to design and paint some large images or graphics onto canvas.
If you can help, please get in touch (0116 2881611 d.wiles@guth.org.uk)
Alternatively, we have a new printer in College which can produce large graphic colour images which students could design themselves.
The PSA now has a fortnightly timetable of study sessions where students are expected to attend, sign in and bring some work so that extra support can be offered to support them with their progress. The area is usually a hive of activity and we hope that once the newly appointed Student Manager, Jan Voss commences her role in March, increased numbers of sixth form students will be able to use the space appropriately.
Extra Curricular Audit
We currently have a good proportion of students already involved in Right to Read, Community Volunteering, as Maths tutors, supporting subject departments and House/student Councils, plus other ventures across the College and community, but not all sixth form students do benefit from these opportunities. Group Tutors are currently consulting with their Year 12 and 13 students to ensure that they are all making productive use of their non contact time to secure ‘soft skills’ such as good communication, using their initiative, team building and leadership skills to enable them to become good citizens, but also to be attractive to future employers. There may be another chance for Year 12 students to receive training and to commence the Right to Read programme in the Summer Term, as well as other methods of support to find the right volunteering opportunity for them.
Those students who have chosen to leave Guthlaxton at the end of this year will be invited to attend the Life Skills Conference on Friday 26th March. We have a number of interactive activities for students to be engaged in, as well as for them to receive sound advice about banking and personal finance, personal safety, young people and the law, and survival cookery- all essential advice and guidance for life beyond Sixth Form.

It’s great to see an increase in the number of applications sent off to UCAS this year. Students should be soon receiving their final offers over the next few months and need to have replied by 5th May or 8th June depending on the last date of their offers. (Students should be informed directly via TRACK when they should respond). Students who have not secured a place can still apply for courses with vacancies through EXTRA which allows students to apply for courses with vacancies between the end of February and the end of June.
Applications to the Sixth Form for entry in September 2010
Year 11 students who have applied to the Sixth Form should start to receive responses via their Group Tutor from 8th March. Heads and Assistant Heads of House are working through some 300+ applications agreeing on the best routes into Post 16 Education. If students receive their applications back they may need to have a rethink about their options and seek further advice from their subject teachers.
