Year 11 Annual Reviews

Thank you to all parents who attended the annual review meetings on Thursday, 5th November. These were positive meetings indicating huge progress made by students. Our thanks to everyone involved in ensuring these outcomes.

The Change School Programme

As part of the programme for the Government's Flagship Creative Partnership we are developing partnership work with The Curve Theatre in Leicester and hope to engage parents in this programme.

On Monday 30th November David Wood, a consultant, will be visiting the College to evaluate the impact of the Change School Programme. Guthlaxton College is proud to be one of eight schools nationally involved in this evaluative research.

We welcome any ideas of how we can engage you in this programme. Please contact Sally Cox on 0116 2881611 if you have any suggestions of activities you wish to see put on as part of the opportunity.

Young Americans

As part of the Wigston Federation of Arts programme Guthlaxton College are hosting the Young Americans. This is due to take place during the weekend of 12th - 14th March. It is an opportunity for 200 young people from the Wigston schools to participate in a singing and dancing event. The extravaganza will take place on Friday at 4.00 – 9.00pm, Saturday at 9.00am – 9.00pm and Sunday at 10.00am – 9.00pm. The participants will enjoy a feast of activity, hot meals at lunch and teatime at a cost of £45.00. This has been subsidised by The Arts at Abington, Bushloe and Guthlaxton and by the Wigston Extended Services. It will cost students from these schools £30.00.

The Wigston Arts Federation Festival

We are delighted to announce The Wigston Arts Federation Festival. This involves all Primary, High Schools and Guthlaxton College hosting a festival of Arts from Monday 28th June to Monday 12th July.

It promises to be two weeks of activity across the art forms with Proms in the Park, Literacy Showcase, Art Exhibition, Bye Bye Blues and lots of other events.

Arts Activities

Guthlaxton College is delighted to host a wealth of arts activities. We are proud to have a strong association with the Leicester Philharmonic Choir who use our facilities for rehearsals every Monday. Stage Coach, the Phoenix Choir, SWM Theatre, Wigston Male Voice choir, Wigston School of Dance, the Salvation Army and Leicestershire Arts are just a few of the partnerships we enjoy.

Artsmark 2010

The Artsmark application has been completed and our fingers are crossed for success in the Spring. Watch this space for more news.

Children In Need

The annual Children in Need appeal is scheduled for Friday, 20th November. The College is involved in fund raising for this charity and there will be a range of activities taking place on that day to support this very worthy appeal.

Christmas Hampers

The annual Christmas Hamper appeal for the elderly in Wigston will be taking place in December.

Please support your son/daughter by encouraging them to bring tinned and packet foods in to College as they prepare their hampers for this traditional appeal.

Year 12 Geography Students Visit Barcelona

The annual Geography field trip to Barcelona is scheduled to take place on 22nd November. Seventeen students accompanied by Mark Birkenshaw and Sally Cox will enjoy a five day placement with staff from the Barcelona Field Studies Centre. They will be involved in exploring the urban, rural and physical geography for the area.

Year 9 Able and More Able

The Year 9 Able and More Able Enhancement Programme 2009-2010 had been launched. Twenty Gifted and Talented pupils from our three feeder High Schools join Janice Thompson, Sally Cox and other colleagues on Wednesday evenings to participate in a range of enhancement activities in Geography, Media, Drama, Food Technology, Music, Science and so on. This will culminate in a two day experience in June.
