Award Evening 2009/10

The 19th Guthlaxton Annual Award Evening took place on Thursday 17th September celebrating the success of Year 11 and 13 students. Over 300 awards were presented. Ms Sally Eyden (Editor of Fabulous Magazine) ex-student of the College gave an uplifting and timely address to the students.

This occasion is a great tribute to the hard work and commitment of the students, their teachers, associate staff and parents to be able to make so many well-deserved presentations. Well done to all.

Opportunities Evening 2009

The Guthlaxton College Opportunities Evening is scheduled for Wednesday, 7th October commencing at 5.30pm. It is an opportunity for our prospective students and parents at 14+ and 16+ to visit the College and talk to teachers and students about the variety of courses and opportunities offered by the College.

In addition there will be over 50 providers including local businesses, universities and colleges joining us for the occasion to offer advice and guidance regarding future opportunities.

We cordially invite all prospective Year 9 and Year 12 students and their parents.

Year 9 Able and More Able Enrichment Programme

The Year 9 Able and More Able enrichment programme has commenced. Over twenty Year 9 pupils from our three feeder High Schools have a very full and entertaining programme on Wednesday evenings. The activities include Drama, Media, Library, Geography, Food Technology, Electronics, Art and Science. This is the eighth year of this highly successful programme.

The new revised Guthlaxton College prospectus is completed and will be distributed via High Schools.

If you require a prospectus please contact your child’s High School in the first instance.

Beyond the Moon Project

Citizen 598 Theatre Company successfully gained a grant from the Science Society Small Award Scheme to develop the “Beyond the Moon” project. This work has been developed in conjunction with Leicester University Astrophysics Department.

The theatre group will be in residency at Guthlaxton College during October. The project is inspired by the first landing on the moon on 21st July 1969.

We are looking forward to seeing this project develop and wish Citizen 598 the very best of luck.

Artsmark Round 10

We are in the midst of applying for Artsmark Gold. This is a national Kitemark which recognises good practice in Arts education. We hope to build upon our success in achieving Artsmark Gold in 2001, 2004 and 2007.

Good luck to the Media, Performing and Visual Arts.

Extended Services

Lisa Robinson has been working closely with our Primary and High Schools and she has developed a huge range of exciting projects. Her newsletter is available on our website.

The next project is a Schools Council conference which is being led by the Guthlaxton College Student Council and Student Ambassadors. This is due to take place on Wednesday 7th October at Leicester Race Course, Oadby and promises to be an exciting day built around the Olympic legacy and recycling.

The Mighty Creatives

We commence Year Two as part of The Creative Partnership Change School programme. Our objective is to embed creativity in our teaching and learning and to seek creative ways to engage parents in learning.

As parents, if you have any ideas or wish to be involved in developing this initiative please contact Sally Cox at the College.

Creativity Day

On Wednesday, 30th September the College day will be collapsed and our teaching and associate staff and students will be engaged in a Creativity Day. We will be joined by 20 Creative Practitioners who will be involved in creating:

  • a tutor group mascot
  • a House logo
  • a performance presentation
  • a tutor room legacy

This promises to be a fun-filled day where students will work together to develop the new tutor group and House ethos.
