This season has been a rollercoaster ride for the Year 10 football team. The season started well for Guthlaxton College, entering the National and County Cups, as well as the County League to play for. The boys’ first challenge was progressing through to the third round of the National Cup, beating teams from Derbyshire and Leicestershire. This run continued until a last minute controversial goal sent the Guthlaxton boys out of the cup against local rivals Robert Smyth School. However, not to be disheartened, Guthlaxton continued to push further forwards, drawing with Lutterworth in the County league.

Guthlaxton were now fighting on two fronts, the County Cup & League, which led to a game against John Cleveland in the Cup and League double header. Despite being the away team, Guthlaxton came out victorious, winning 3-2. This put our boys through into a quarter final against De Lisle School. This game, played in the spring time, was won convincingly by the boys from Guthlaxton 2 goals to nil. This set up a fantastic semi-final against local team Lancaster Boys School. Desperate to get to the final, Guthlaxton put everything into a hard fought game, and with the scores tied at 2-2, Guthlaxton looked to be in contention, until Lancaster scored two goals to pull away and win 4-2, with Guthlaxton’s dream in the County Cup ending at the heartbreaking stages of the semi finals.

Guthlaxton also did well respectively in the County League, coming third in the league having remained unbeaten, but drawing far too many games including William Bradford, Lutterworth and Beauchamp College to claim the title at the first time of asking.

On an international level, Guthlaxton’s boys took to the sky where sunny Barcelona was waiting to test the team with a new challenge of football awaiting. Their opposition included CF Manresa, FC La Roca and CD Blanes. All of these teams proved to be tough opposition for the team from Wigston; however, Guthlaxton came away from the tour in top form, remaining unbeaten, with two draws and one win, the only team on tour to achieve this feat.

The team now looks towards next years County Cup and League, now appearing more of a team, and with more confidence in their ability, this year has been a success for the team. This can only lead to more success next year for the boys in Year 11.
