Year 13 A-Level Drama and Theatre Students visit the Globe theatre for tour and to see Romeo & Juliet
On Sunday 31st May, the year 13 A2 Level Drama and Theatre Studies students set off early to visit the Globe Theatre on London’s Bankside for a tour around and to see the matinee performance of Romeo & Juliet.
The venue itself is a very special building which owes its existence to the passion and unswerving dedication of American actor Sam Wannamaker, father of Zoe Wannamaker. Unfortunately Sam died before this stunning building was complete in 1997.
This building was created using original materials and was based on pictures and accounts of the original Globe theatre.
The students were treated to an informative tour of the theatre learning about it’s historical significance and about life and theatre in Elizabathan and Jacobean London.
The performance of Romeo & Juliet was not only an excellent piece of theatre with some stand out performances but also a thrilling experience as we stood in the area once occupied by the "groundlings" or "penny stinkards" as the peasants were then called.
Although this trip was essentially for exam purposes everyone left with great memories and significant knowledge with many vowing to return again soon.
