The Excellence in Enterprise Awards are for KS4 students to volunteer to take part in a challenge. The LEBC publish the challenges and the students choose the one they want to tackle.

In the Autumn Term a variety of students volunteered to take part in the 2008/2009 Excellence in Enterprise Awards challenges. They began to investigate their chosen challenge and to research the background to their solutions.

Rachel Marriott, Charlotte Pearson, Grace Westbury and Jade Thomas all took on the Babcock Pursuits challenge. They visited the company at Whetstone and were given the details of the problem and were helped to consider the ways in which they could produce a solution. Babcock are very proud of their safety policy and the students were asked to produce a campaign based on one of three methods of promoting safety. The girls chose to warn young people of the dangers of Free Running, especially if the participants have been drinking. They produced an excellent powerpoint presentation, posters, leaflets and a script for a radio broadcast. They made their presentation to the staff from Babcock which was highly praised.

Mrs Vaughan also advised a team, they are James Swift, Vicky Hawley, Samantha Gaskin, Sean Stokes, Nicole Dishington and Damien Robertson-Kirby. . These students went to the Holiday Inn to learn about the importance of customer care, presentation of food and healthy menus. They then produced their own work on a powerpoint presentation about the benefits of working for the International Hotel Group.

Another team has been led by Georgina Jones with Sophie Hall, Daniells Kedger, Kim Roberts, Nathan White and Arron Grayston. These students went to the Leicester College Beauty Department to learn about the requirements when designing a Spa Treatment Room. They then had to suggest ideas for the College to use when they actually refurbish their treatment room next year. The work had to contain mood boards, scale drawings and design plans for the room with a chosen theme as the basis of the designs. Georgina carefully guided the team and she produced the display for the judges. This team were Runners-up in the Awards for this challenge and congratulations go to Georgina for all of her hard work.

The group advised by Ms Walker are Kathryn Reynolds, Danielle Wetton, Milena Kesicka and Amy Brown. This group accepted the challenge to design the publicity materials for the LEBC Leicestershire Schools Fashion Show 2010. The students were given a strict brief to follow to ensure that the range of materials produced meets the requirements of the Fashion Show. They then worked on their designs and presented them to the judges. This group were the Award Winners and received their trophy from the High Sherriff of Leicestershire on behalf of the sponsor company Letzprint of Loughborough. We are very proud of their achievement and congratulate them on such an outstanding piece of work. We look forward to seeing their designs all over Leicestershire next year.

The Awards Evening was held at the Samworth Academy on Wednesday 29th April 2009 and the audience of 250 guests and students. Mr Coles attended, alongside the teachers mentioned, and we were all very proud of all of the Guthlaxton students. Well done to everyone involved.
