Update of Sixth Form events Spring 2009.
32 students in Year 12 and Year 13 volunteered to be part of this year’s Life Skills Conference. They each had the chance to experience a mock interview with representatives from DMU, Hayes and Monarch. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the survival cookery part as well as benefitting from the support and guidance of Lloyds TSB about banking and finance and Alison Forster who raised their attention about the risks of drugs and their effects. The employers were well fed and watered and offered plenty of constructive advice to students to develop their interview technique.
In February, a number of Sixth Form students supported undergraduates at DMU in their research into setting up a new radio station called Demon FM. They have been invited to join them again in April at the university to continue with some more ideas.
For Red Nose Day, Sixth Form students decided to wear pyjamas in support of the charity fund raising. They also had traditional party games in the common room at lunchtime and Holly Millerchip baked loads of cakes the night before to satisfy sugar fans across the Sixth Form! The Pickpockets, a Sixth Form band, also had their first live performance at Guthlaxton in the hall on Friday 13th March. They had a good crowd to support them and have now been invited to play in Sixth Form assembly and during the Sixth Form induction in June.
Representatives from NHS Leicester requested to come into Guthlaxton in March to offer advice and free testing for Sixth Form students. This is a county wide initiative to raise awareness of sexually transmitted infections across the 16-21 age group. Students were able to have a test for chlamydia and will receive their results by text. Most students volunteered and felt that it was a positive new initiative. More healthy living events will be planned for the College from September 2009.
Most Year 11 students have now received information with regard to their applications to the Sixth Form. Some students will be offered some additional careers guidance from Connexions so that they are able to find the most suitable pathway for their education Post 16. The Sixth Form Induction will take place from Monday 22nd- 24th June. Students will receive more information in May.
