Man of the Match: Ryan Purple
After a long wait since the disappointing defeat in the National Cup, Guthlaxtons year 11s got back to winning ways with a comprehensive four nil win over Lutterworth. The squad had had several meetings regarding their recent defeat and many discussions about mistakes made and how they would grow and learn from this blemish to their record.
A new formation was the first solution and 3-5-2 was the choice. More width for Callum Earls and Chris Weston and authority in the middle of the park with the three of Ryan Purple, Aiden Kirby and Chad Bradshaw. It however took Guthlaxton twenty minutes to get used to this new formation and this allowed Lutterworth to cause a few problems, without really causing much work for Jack Ridley between the sticks.
A goal always helps and a pinpoint corner from Man of the match, Ryan Purple, found Callum Earls free at the back post to head home. This was just what was needed, Gutho then surged forward, you could see the confidence start to return and with Purple pulling the strings and Bradshaw and Kirby supporting him the game started to flow more towards the Lutterworth goal.
The second came from a solid piece of defending though, Lewis Hill, captaining the side again won the header and found his centre back partner Luke Read. Read found Weston whose long ball beat the right back and fell perfect for Earls. His left foot strike flew past the keeper into the far corner and the lead was doubled. However more was still to come; The midfield three battled hard and won a free kick, whilst Lutterworth set themselves up the quick thinking Purple played it short to Bradshaw, his through ball found Weston who crossed low for Liam Burden to bundle home. A ten minute onslaught and the game was well in Guthos control.
At the half time break Baldwin changed back to 4-4-2 and introduced Connor McCormack for his Gutho debut at left back. This allowed Ryan Woolley to have more influence on the game in his usual right back slot. Lutterworth came strong at the beginning of the second half but Gutho did well to hold them who without testing Ridley with a shot on target.
Purple had moved to the right and was still influential in the game, his combination with Woolley and Bradshaw showed the confidence coming back and this quickly spread throughout the team. Earls could have had his hat-trick but failed to slot home for close distance but it was substitute Ben Vegh, who had replaced Burden who scored the fourth. A great cross field diagonal from Liam Read found Earls, whose header allowed Vegh time to dummy the centre half and then chip the oncoming keeper.
Four nil at the final whistle and the next unbeaten run is on.
