Sixth Form update

Since the Christmas break, many Year 12 and Year 13 students have been involved in module exams towards their final AS and A2 levels, hence the mood around B-block has been a studious one.

The Sixth Form Management Team has had its first meeting of the year and have agreed to organise a committee to start the task of planning for a leaver’s yearbook and the Social Committee have requested more members to be able to plan a half term party around Valentine’s day.

We are also moving towards a Sixth Form non-uniform day for BRAKE, the road safety charity. Neil Snow from BRAKE will talk to Year 12 students in PSE on Wednesday 11th February about the potential dangers of young drivers who do not act in a responsible manner behind the wheel. In support of BRAKE and the fund towards improving the common room, students are invited to wear a bright top and donate a minimum of £1.

Nathan Higgs and a group of Year 12 students are keen to raise money to pursue their goal of having a plasma screen in the common room. They will increase party tickets to use some of the profits towards the fund as well as organising a charity dodge ball tournament.

Student Finance England

Student Finance England will help you work out the financial support you’ll get, apply for finance and keep track of your payments:

  • New students will be able to apply for student finance at the same time as they make their UCAS application
  • An online calculator will help you work out how much you can get and even see what bursaries may be available at your preferred university or college
  • After you have applied you will be able to manage your own account online; if, at any point, you need assistance or advice you can easily communicate with an advisor using secure messaging

The site should be open from 9th February. Year 13 students will receive some guidance from Mrs Wilson in PSE.

Christmas Dinner

The Sixth Form Christmas dinner was well attended and enjoyed by staff and students. Mr. Norris and Mr. Baldwin did a great job as DJ’s. Many photographs were taken and one in particular has been used to create a postcard which has been sent to students to congratulate them on their continued good effort for their academic progress during the Autumn Term.

The Sixth Form also enjoyed their first Christmas lunch held in the community lounge at the back of B-Block. Rita and Sharon had even organised table clothes and crackers! The Christmas Pudding was excellent! Definitely an event to add to the Sixth Form traditions.

Life Skills Conference

Mrs Wilson and Mrs Forster are planning to organise a conference for Sixth Form students on Wednesday 18th March. Similar to last year, students will be invited to take part in developing their interview skills, talking to local employers and Higher Education providers, as well the chance to get some survival cooking and budgeting tips. We’d really like to be able to offer some kind of looking after yourself option, perhaps even self defence… If you have any skills you could offer, please contact Mrs A Forster on 0116 2881611.
