Guthlaxton College celebrated its 50th Anniversary on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th November 2008. The anniversary was marked by a number of activities.

The celebrations commenced at midday on Saturday with the planting of three trees kindly donated by Alderman Duncan Lucas, Governor of the College. A walnut tree was planted by the current Principal, Mr John Keller, and two oak trees by Mayor Gore and two former Principal’s Mr Michael Fields (1995 – 2007) and Mr Graham Norris (1971 - 1995). The trees commemorate the landmark anniversary and serve as a memorial to a former student who sadly died in action earlier in 2008, Daniel Shirley.

Other activities included the creation of a memory wall, an open house with a right to roam, a display of memorabilia, space and time to reminisce with old acquaintances and an opportunity to make new friends and amble along the corridors into classrooms, teaching spaces, laboratories and other areas.

The celebrations marked the start of twelve months of celebrations which included the Christmas Celebrations on 10th and 11th December enjoyed by full audiences the College Musical Oklahoma to be performed during the first week in March, the Dance Showcase on 22nd January and Bye Bye Blues concerts on 25th and 26th June.

The weekend was enjoyed by many alumni who visited from local haunts, county wide destinations and others from as far afield as Canada and Hong Kong. Former students and staff alike were able to share in the history of the College which has served the community of Wigston successfully for 50 years. We hope the next 50 years will prove as flourishing and rewarding for the students, teachers and friends of the College.
