Guthlaxton College 1 – Countersthorpe College 2
On a warm afternoon, Guthlaxton College played in their first local derby against a Countersthorpe team who were looking to impose their dominance on the game. Guthlaxton chose to field a team consisting of a few fringe players, in the hope that Mr Baldwin, Mr Quail and Mr Goss could unearth some hidden talent that they may have missed throughout the training sessions, and they weren’t disappointed. With many players including, James Pole, Max Anderson and Ben Deacon impressing.
However in the game it was Countersthorpe who took the game to the hosts, hitting the crossbar when an early cross was met with a strong head from the Countersthorpe number 10 could only find the woodwork. Guthlaxton eventually started to get a hold on the game after this and looked to press forwards more and spread the ball out wide to Max and Scott Foster.
First blood however, fell to the visitors, when a breakdown in communication between the centre back and right back, led to a goal by the Countersthorpe striker ho slotted home on 23 minutes. This appeared to rally the Guthlaxton boys, and from this moment on, they looked to be pressing further forwards and looking to attack, And they received their reward, when, with 5 minutes remaining in the first half, a dropped ball fell kindly to Max Anderson, who curled a thunderous strike into the top corner leaving the Countersthorpe keeper wondering what had just happened!
The second half was a lot closer with Guthlaxton using the sun to their advantage to push on into the Countersthorpe half. Despite this pressure, Countersthorpe were still dangerous, as Sam Dunkley was called into action several time with a string of fantastic saves to keep the home team in the tie. However Guthlaxton could not keep out the Coutnersthorpe team any longer, when a through ball again had the better of the home defence, allowing the striker to slot home into the far side of the goal. Guthlaxton did not let this deter them and continued to push with James Pole coming close in the final minutes. After the game Mr Quail is quoted as saying;
"We were unlucky today, and I felt a draw would have been a fairer outcome, but is great to see players pushing for positions and their may be some surprises in the team for the next league match!"
