Competition:Leicester League
Date:6th December
Result:Won 5-0

Man of the Match: Ryan Woolley

It was a wet and windy day for the away trip to John Cleveland College but the Guthlaxton boys were up to the challenge. A professional approach was asked for by Mr Baldwin and that is what the team eventually performed.

With the wind behind them and playing down the slope the first half, Guthlaxton wanted to set the tempo on the game and take full control. Possession was going to be the key and the ball over the top would not work in the conditions, so it looked like they would have to play the passing football they have developed this year. Guthlaxton started well and kept control of the ball during the early stages but could not get a good strike on target or score the goals that were needed. JCC looked dangerous at times but the back four for Guthlaxton were solid.

Finally, five minutes left of the first half it was captain, Lewis Hill who struck home from a corner to break the deadlock. Guthlaxton wanted more before the half time break. The pressure seemed to lift and with excellent free flowing football, Ryan Purple stepped up at the back post to miss a sitter from seven yards. With the score at 1-0 at half time and the slope and wind to contend with, Mr Baldwin could not help but feel that one goal was not enough.

A slight change in tactics for the second half, a substitution to bring on Dale Baker and Guthlaxton took the field knowing they were going to have to battle for the victory. Within ten minutes of the restart, some great inter-play by the midfield led to a quality cross field knock by the ever impressive Callum Earls. This found Purple unmarked at the far post to slot home his first goal in three years. Ben Vegh replaced Mantalios up front and Guthlaxton were in full control.

The back four of Woolley, Webster, Reed and Baker looked very composed and dealt with any threat thrown at them. Earls got better and better as the game progressed with Hill and Bradshaw distributing nicely in the centre of the park. Liam Reed worked hard and was rewarded with his first goal for Guthlaxton. This was closely followed by his second, and Guthlaxton’s fourth. Seamus Young made his school debut replacing Ryan Purple and his efforts helped produce the fifth goal for Ben Vegh.

A comprehensive 5-0 victory and the Guthlaxton boys head to the top of the league.

Further congratulations to Lewis Hill, Callum Earl, Chad Bradshaw and Ryan Purple for making the Leicestershire District side and Lewis Hill and Callum Earls for making the Leicestershire Schools County side. Good effort boys! A great further boost for the Guthlaxton Football Academy!
